General questions
Can cats use Doc Itchy products?
Some Doc Itchy formulas may be appropriate for cats, but cats have different needs and sensitivities. Please confirm the specific product and dose with your veterinarian before use.
What should I do if my bottle contains broken chews?
Please contact the Doc Itchy team and include your order details and photos. We will review the issue and help with an appropriate replacement when applicable. Your feedback also helps us improve product quality and shipping.
Do you ship to Canada?
Not at the moment. Doc Itchy currently ships within the United States, and we hope to expand availability in the future.
Can I split the daily dose into morning and evening servings?
Yes. The recommended daily amount can be divided between morning and evening meals if that suits your dog's routine. Do not exceed the total daily amount on the label, because these are medically dosed supplements.
Is it safe to stay on these supplements long term?
The formulas are designed to support skin, glands and immune health over both the short and long term, and most dogs can stay on them continuously. There is no need to cycle off unless your veterinarian advises it.
Is it better to give the chew on an empty stomach or with food?
Either is fine—the chews are formulated to be effective with or without food. If your dog has a sensitive stomach, giving the chew with a meal can make digestion easier.
Who developed the Doc Itchy formulas?
Doc Itchy products were formulated by Dr. Keith Hnilica, a board-certified veterinary dermatologist with more than 30 years of clinical experience treating skin conditions in pets. Read more on Our Story.
Where are Doc Itchy products made and tested?
Some components are globally sourced, and every batch is tested in the USA to confirm it is safe, clean and contains the precise amounts of active ingredients listed on the label. We are actively working toward full US-based production.
Itch Defense
How should a 100–110 lb dog use Itch Defense?
The product label recommends two chews per day for dogs over 50 lb. Because zinc-responsive dermatosis is a specific condition, confirm supplementation with your veterinarian so it fits the complete care plan.
Can a 4-month-old puppy use Hair Skin & Nails or Itch Defense?
Please check with your veterinarian before giving Hair Skin & Nails or Itch Defense to a 4-month-old puppy. Your veterinarian can confirm whether either formula is appropriate for the puppy’s age and individual needs.
Itch Recovery Probiotic
Why do many pet supplements include probiotics?
Probiotic effects are species- and strain-specific. Evidence varies by age, condition and outcome, so one probiotic cannot stand in for every other probiotic. Doc Itchy focuses each formula on its intended ingredients; see The Science for the studies associated with the specific strains we use.
Why does this formula not include colostrum?
Colostrum is a dairy-derived ingredient used by some pet supplement brands. Doc Itchy does not include it in this formula and instead prioritizes ingredients selected for the formula’s intended purpose. Dogs with food sensitivities should review every label with their veterinarian.
Hair Skin & Nails
What can I do if my dog refuses the Hair Skin & Nails chew?
Medical-strength amounts of Vitamin A and niacinamide can taste naturally bitter. Try crumbling the chew into a small amount of peanut butter, plain yogurt, applesauce or wet food. Ask your veterinarian if you are unsure whether the formula is appropriate for your dog.
Why does my dog prefer other treats?
Doc Itchy chews are formulated as supplements rather than ordinary treats. Research-based amounts of Vitamin A and niacinamide can taste bitter, and the formula is not masked with heavy flavoring. Try mixing the chew into a small amount of a favorite food.
Why are the Vitamin A and niacinamide amounts different from other brands?
The amounts are based on published medical research and clinical experience in veterinary dermatology. Review the ingredient research on The Science page and ask your veterinarian whether the formula is appropriate for your dog.
Does a better-tasting chew provide the same formula?
Taste does not show whether two products contain the same ingredients or amounts. Compare the complete labels and discuss your dog’s needs with your veterinarian. Doc Itchy prioritizes the intended active ingredients over making the chew taste like an ordinary treat.
Why is niacinamide included in an oral chew?
Niacinamide is a form of Vitamin B3 used in both topical and oral products. Veterinary dermatology literature has evaluated oral niacinamide—often alongside other care—for skin and immune-mediated conditions. See The Science for the evidence and ask your veterinarian about suitability.
My dog was diagnosed with SLO. Which supplements can help?
For symmetrical lupoid onychodystrophy (SLO), veterinary dermatologists often recommend medical-strength niacinamide (Vitamin B3) and Vitamin A alongside EPA-rich omega-3 fatty acids. Our Hair, Skin & Nails formula provides clinical doses of Vitamin A and niacinamide, and it is commonly paired with roughly 500 mg of EPA omega-3 daily. Always review the plan with your veterinarian, especially for autoimmune conditions.
Rejuvenating Hair Grower
How much fat is in Rejuvenating Hair Grower?
The oil-based ingredients—hemp seed oil, flaxseed oil and sunflower lecithin—contain small amounts of fat. Together, the total fat content is approximately 0.24 g per 2 g chew.
Should Rejuvenating Hair Grower continue after the hair returns?
Ongoing use depends on your dog’s age, diagnosis and response. The approved guidance recommends continuing every evening for dogs over 10. For younger dogs with episodic hair loss, the guidance is to stop after regrowth and, if alopecia returns, consider a three-months-on, three-months-off cycle with veterinary guidance.
Does Rejuvenating Hair Grower contain xylitol?
No. Rejuvenating Hair Grower does not contain xylitol. Active ingredients per 1 chew (2 g): Hemp Seed Powder 150 mg; Hemp Seed Oil 150 mg; Valerian Root Powder 100 mg; Omega-3 Fatty Acids 41 mg; Omega-6 Fatty Acids 101 mg; Omega-9 Fatty Acids 23 mg; Melatonin 10 mg. Inactive ingredients: citric acid, citrus pectin, dried yeast, flaxseed meal, glycerin, gum arabic, mixed tocopherols, molasses, oat flour, peanut butter powder, propionic acid, pumpkin powder, rosemary extract, rye flour, silicon dioxide and soy lecithin.
Why can't Doc Itchy products be shipped to Idaho?
Idaho state regulations currently prohibit the sale of products containing hemp ingredients, even non-psychoactive ones. If the rules change, we hope to serve Idaho customers in the future.
How long until I see new hair growth?
Hair regrowth is slow. Most pet parents notice early signs such as soft stubble or patchy regrowth at around 4 to 6 weeks, though full results can take longer depending on your dog's condition and coat cycle. Consistency matters.
Do you test that each chew contains 10 mg of melatonin?
Yes. Every batch undergoes quality control analysis to confirm the active ingredient levels, including the 10 mg of melatonin per chew, and to check for contaminants.
Should melatonin be given every 12 hours instead of once a day?
Once daily in the evening is recommended. Melatonin naturally peaks at night, where it supports restful sleep and healthy hormone balance.
